DOBBINS HEIGHTS — An award-winning artist will have his work on display and give a speech on believing in one’s self on this weekend.
Karl Wilkes, of Columbia, South Carolina, will feature some of his works for the Black Art Exhibit from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the Dobbins Heights Community Center.
Wilkes was born at Fort Bragg and has taught art to middle-schoolers, college students and organizations throughout the Department of Defense, according to his website.
His art has been displayed at Carnegie Hall and the Columbia Metropolitan Airport and he is the recipient of several awards..
“Art is everything,” Wilkes told the Cola Daily in 2014 when working on a mural with students in Richland County, South Carolina. “Art is the way we walk, the way we talk, dress, the cars we drive, the clothes we wear — we paint a picture of ourselves of how we want people to perceive us.”
There will be refreshments available during the exhibit.
