Man charged with stealing UTV in Cordova

CORDOVA — A man is facing felony charges after allegedly stealing an off-road vehicle.

Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office believe 33-year-old Robert Edward Smith is responsible for stealing a utility task vehicle from the Cordova area last week.

Smith was arrested Tuesday, March 26 and charged with one count each of felony larceny and larceny of a motor vehicle.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail on a $10,000 secured bond. Online jail records Thursday afternoon appear to show he has been released. Smith is scheduled to appear in court April 11.

Online court records show Smith also has a pending charge of second-degree trespassing from earlier this year.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Smith was convicted in 2008 of possession of drug paraphernalia. His probation was revoked later that year, resulting in a six-week incarceration.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court of law.
