RCSO: Man charged with trying to steal East Rockingham ATM; accomplice on the run after pursuit

ROCKINGHAM — A Durham man is accused of trying to steal an ATM in Richmond County early Monday morning.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a call of a suspicious vehicle near the automatic teller machine on Airport Road around 3:28 a.m. July 10.

The deputies, en route, were reportedly told that two individuals in a black SUV appeared to be stealing the ATM.

One of the deputies reportedly passed by a dark SUV that matched the description on the suspect vehicle while on Airport Road. According to the sheriff’s office, that deputy turned around and started following the vehicle, noticing a yellow tow strap hanging out the back.

The deputy reportedly activated his lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly kept going, leading to a pursuit into Hamlet.

Once in Hamlet, the alleged driver, 22-year-old Jaylin Dashaun Beal, and passenger jumped out of the vehicle and took off running. Beal was reportedly caught by a deputy, but the passenger was not found.

Beal was arrested and charged with attempted larceny, possession of burglary tools, fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, and resisting a public officer.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail at 5:38 a.m., where is being held on a $50,000 secured bond. Beal is scheduled to appear in court July 26.

Online records with the N.C. Court System and Department of Adult Correction appear to show Beal has no pending charges nor prior convictions in the state.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
