PEMBROKE — August 18, 2020, marks 100 years since the 19th Amendment of the Constitution was ratified, and UNC Pembroke’s Music and History Departments are coming together to tell the tale of the seven-decade fight of the women’s suffrage movement.
“Votes for Women,” the fifth installment in the Songs and Stories concert series, is free and open to the public with a 7:30 p.m. show on Tuesday, March 3, and a second performance on Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m. in the Moore Hall Auditorium.
Featuring more than a dozen student and faculty participants, including both vocalists and instrumentalists, audience members will experience the movement as told through historic music, period photographs and the words of the performers themselves.
UNCP’s Music and History departments have been collaborating since 2013 to tell stories. History professor Jaime Martinez says these collaborations are not only educational, but also brings emotion to the storytelling. The combination of the music, narrative and slideshow of period images come together to bring the story to life and helps people connect to the topic.
