HAMLET — Montgomery Community College graduated its first class from the Truck Driver Training program established in partnership with Richmond Community College. All seven students who started the program successfully earned their commercial driver’s license.

A graduation ceremony was held for the class on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at MCC with leaders from both community colleges in attendance. Remarks were given by Dr. Chad Bledsoe, president of MCC, and Dr. Dale McInnis, president of RichmondCC. Sen. Dave Craven was also on hand to show his ongoing support for this workforce development partnership between the two institutions.

Dean of Engineering and Trades at RichmondCC John Kester presented the Anthony Lynn Above & Beyond Award to CDL graduate Lena Buchanan for her exceptional performance and assistance to others in the class. The award is named in honor of retired RichmondCC CDL instructor Anthony Lynn.

Truck Driver Training graduate Justin Smith, who has already started his career as a truck driver, shared words of encouragement for his fellow classmates.

“As we embark on this new chapter, remember that the road ahead will have its share of obstacles. There will be long hours, tough weather conditions and moments of solitude,” Smith said. “But with each mile we drive, we are gaining experience, our confidence, and a deeper understanding of the vital role we play in keeping the day-to-day life and economy moving.”

MCC will be announcing upcoming CDL classes for fall 2024 and winter 2025.
