NCDOT to host ‘Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day’

RALEIGH – This week, the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the Women’s Transportation Seminars will host the annual “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” program. The event is designed to inform sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school with a passion for engineering or a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subject about an exciting career in a typically male-dominated field.

The program will include several interactive activities to educate the students about being an engineer. The girls will also have the chance to meet several female professional engineers who will offer unique insight about their careers throughout a question-and-answer period.

The springtime program is an exciting opportunity for students and NCDOT employees alike. The students and faculty registered for the April 11 event are from Wake, Johnston, Rowan and Northampton counties.

“At the event, the students will be exposed to the ins and outs of engineering and, hopefully, we’ll create more interest in this field among the students. We also want to promote more diversity and credibility for women and minorities in our profession,” said Sterling Johnston, an NCDOT human relations consultant.

The program will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the N.C. Division of Emergency Management building in Raleigh.
