ROCKINGHAM — Two nights of the recent Civil Wars event at Rockingham Dragway ended with a bang.

On Friday night, singer John Norris opened for Richmond County native Erik Hawks on a stage set up behind the drag strip.

Hawks, backed by the Hard Luck band, performed a collection of country and classic rock covers — including the Allman Brothers’ “Whipping Post” — and several originals.

One of Hawks’ original songs, “Notebooks,” references Bear Branch Road north of Rockingham. Another tune, “Bound,” was co-written with Norris and Paige King Johnson.

Earlier this year, Hawks performed at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach as a nominee for Male Performer of the Year in the Carolina Country Music Awards.

In April, Hawks opened Rockingham’s SpringFest ahead of another homegrown talent: American Idol alum Bucky Covington.

On Saturday, crowds were treated to another concert featuring a tribute to Luke Bryan and Ultimate Aldean, which was followed by a fireworks show.
