2 charged after child found unresponsive, dies in Ellerbe

ELLERBE — Two women have been charged after a child left in their care died.

According to Richmond County Sheriff James Clemmons, deputies and and EMS responded Thursday to a call of an unresponsive toddler on Larry Parsons Road.

Medical treatment was provided to the child — a 22-month-old boy — who was taken to a care facility and later pronounced deceased.

Investigators determined that the child was being kept and at an unlicensed daycare facility and at some point was left in a car, Clemmons said.

The sheriff’s office charged Dorothy Morgan Moore and Paige Elizabeth Black each with involuntary manslaughter and felony child abuse causing serious bodily injury.

They were each given a $30,000 secured bond, but were not listed in jail late Friday morning.

The child’s body was sent to the state medical examiner to determine an exact cause of death.

Clemmons said the investigation is ongoing.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
