ROCKINGHAM — Two men and two women are facing multiple drug charges following a search of a home allegedly used for a marijuana manufacturing operation.
According to court documents, a detective with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office was patrolling on Oct. 3 when he recognized 18-year-old Andru Bryson Deberry, who is reportedly a known associate of a man with outstanding warrants.
After calling for backup, the deputies went up to the home on Goodman Street for a knock-and-talk.
When they stepped on the porch, the investigator said they could smell the odor of marijuana.
When 34-year-old Daniel Keith Hoskins, of Goldsboro, opened the door, the investigator said the odor became stronger.
Hoskins was detained while the deputies performed a security sweep of the residence, where they found Deberry, along with 24-year-old Tyonna Alicia Bristow, of Hamlet, and 25-year-old Kelly Denise Smith, of Wadesboro.
The detective stated in the affidavit that he saw from the door what appeared to be marijuana on a table.
They were also detained and the house was secured while investigators applied for the search warrant, which was executed at 8:19 p.m., documents show.
According to an inventory list, investigators found and seized:
- A handgun inside a holster on the love seat
- A black holster with a pocket knife
- Two jars of marijuana in a recliner
- A stem containing buds on a stool
- A black bag with glass smoking pipes
- Two stalks of marijuana on a white rack
- Five stalks of marijuana hanging in a closet
- A Burger King bag with marijuana in a dresser drawer
- A metal pan with marijuana on a nightstand
- A jar of marijuana under the nightstand
- A stalk, baggie of meth and glass pipe on a bedroom hutch
- A baggie of meth in a dresser drawer
- A pouch with a bag of heroin
In all, investigators say the group was preparing 842 grams of marijuana to sell.
All four were arrested and booked into the Richmond County Jail on the following charges, each with a secured bond:
- Deberry: manufacturing marijuana; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule VI controlled substance; alter or remove a gun’s serial number; $15,000
- Bristow: manufacturing marijuana, possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia; $10,000
- Smith: manufacturing marijuana, possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule VI controlled substance; maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance; possession of Schedule I controlled substance; $25,000
- Hoskins: manufacturing marijuana, possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver marijuana; maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance; possession of methamphetamine; possession of drug paraphernalia; $20,000
Records show Hoskins is being held without bond for a parole violation after he was served Oct. 7. He has a hearing scheduled for Oct. 14.
The day before the search warrant was executed, Hoskins was convicted of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance in Richmond County and given a 24-month suspended sentence, according to records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.
He was convicted last year of possession with intent to sell a Schedule II controlled substance and possession or distribution of a meth precursor in Wayne County
Hoskins was released from prison July 9 following a short incarceration from his probation being revoked in Scotland County. His parole was set to end Feb. 23, 2020.
Bristow is also charged with failing to appear on a misdemeanor and has an additional $300 cash bond.
Smith has an additional $20,000 secured bond for failing to appear on both a misdemeanor and a felony, as well as a $20,000 secured bond for a probation violation.
She was arrested and charged in late June after allegedly being found with 3 grams of meth and needles following a traffic stop in Ellerbe. Those charges, as well as similar charges in Anson County, are still pending.
She received a 30-month suspended sentence July 19 when she was convicted in Anson County of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to state records.
Smith was convicted in Richmond County of felony larceny in 2016.
Deberry was convicted in May of speeding to elude arrest, resisting a public officer and aggressive driving, records show. He currently has several pending traffic citations.
The four defendants are scheduled to appear in court Oct. 24.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
