Burlington man convicted in Richmond County indecent liberties case

ROCKINGHAM — An Alamance County man is waiting to be sent to prison after being convicted in Richmond County Superior Court of sex crimes that happened three years ago.

Court records show 46-year-old Gary Eugene Frye Jr., of Burlington, entered an Alford Plea on Monday to three counts of taking indecent liberties with a child.

An Alford Plea is when a defendant does not admit guilt, but does acknowledge that prosecutors have enough evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. It stems from a 1963 murder case in North Carolina.

The offense occurred in September of 2016 and Frye was arrested two years later, records show.

Frye was sentenced to 19-32 months in prison and will have 60 months of supervised probation, according to court records.

Special conditions of his conviction include registering as a sex offender and not being around any persons deemed inappropriate by a probation officer. Frye will also have to undergo psychiatric counseling.

He received credit for 60 days of time already served awaiting trial and was also recommended for work release.

Frye was in the Richmond County Jail on Wednesday awaiting transportation to a prison.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Frye was convicted in 1993 of felony child abuse in Alamance County.

The previous year, he was convicted of a single misdemeanor count of receiving stolen goods.

Frye received probation in both cases.
