In another new featured column, the Richmond Observer is proud to announce it will be showcasing a weekly “Raiders Marching Band Member of the Week.” Written by Celve Baxley, this feature will shadow the Official Richmond County Athlete of the Week.
In its inaugural week, Richmond Raider Marching Band director Mike Ward has chosen Cameron McDonald.
“Cameron exemplifies what I deem to be a student musician,” Ward said. “There are student athletes; well he is a student musician. He excels academically and is a role model to the entire marching band.”
Get to know Cameron:
Class: Senior
Age: 17
Instrument: McDonald plays quints or tenor percussion.
Years in Marching Band: 4 years
Other instruments played: “I play guitar, trumpet, and piano,” McDonald said. “I take piano lessons. I was taught guitar by my dad, who used to own the music store here. I learned trumpet in middle school and still play in concert season here at the high school.”
Extracurricular Activities at RSHS: McDonald is a member of the National Beta Club, National Honor Society and the Coexist Club.
Favorite classes at RSHS: Marching Band
Hobbies: “I try to write music,” McDonald said. “I enjoy tinkering with computers. And I enjoy playing video games such as Call of Duty.
College Aspirations: “I would like to go to North Carolina State University and major in Computer Science Engineering,” McDonald said. “I have a brother who goes there. He is a meteorology and geology major. I plan to apply for the Park Scholarship at State.”
