Cordova man charged with stealing from neighbor

CORDOVA — A man is accused of breaking into a neighbor’s home nearly two months ago, stealing jewelry and a video game system.

According to warrants, 39-year-old Mitchell Wayne Heaton Jr., of Center Street in Cordova, broke into a home on the same road on April 20.

Heaton allegedly stole an Xbox 360 console with a controller, many miscellaneous pieces of Paparazzi jewelry and a vintage bracelet, all valued around $850.

He then sold at least some of the property to someone else for $30, an arrest warrant shows. The warrant did not specify which pieces of stolen property were sold.

A warrant for Heaton’s arrest was issued June 5 and he was arrested that day by the Wilmington Police Department.

Heaton was booked into the Richmond County Jail around 2:50 Tuesday afternoon under a $5,000 secured bond, records show.

He is charged with one felony count each of breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering and obtaining property by false pretenses and is scheduled to appear in court July 5.

Online court records show Heaton has no other pending charges in the state.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Heaton was previously convicted of misdemeanor larceny in Richmond County in 1997 and damage to property, also a misdemeanor, in Onslow County in 2016.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
