Distant smoke is controlled burn

William R. Toler - Richmond Observer

ELLERBE — A plume of smoke from a controlled burn could be seen and smelled from Rockingham early Monday afternoon.

Jordan Lumber, based in Mount Gilead, submitted a burn plan to the N.C. Forest Service, according to Don Watson, district forester. The address on the plan was from the company’s Wadesboro office.

He said, according to the plan, there were 248 acres in the tract.

Fires were burning on both sides of the road and visibility was greatly diminished at times, depending on the direction of the wind.

It’s possible the crew could be finished burning off the property on Sandhill Game Management Road by the end of the day, he said, depending on how fast it burns.

The family run business, founded in 1939, is one of the nation’s largest privately owned lumber companies, according to its website.
