East Rockingham man charged, released in reported machete assault

ROCKINGHAM — A man is facing charges after allegedly hitting another with a machete and damaging the victim’s truck.

According to an arrest warrant, 41-year-old Bercanen Morales Velasqez, of Safie 6th Street, hit a man on the left side of the head with a machete on June 30.

Velasquez is also accused of damaging the windshield and two windows of the victim’s Dodge Ram pickup truck.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office charged Velasquez with assault with a deadly weapon and injury to personal property, both misdemeanors.

He was taken to the Richmond County Magistrate’s office and released on a $1,000 unsecured bond.

Velasquez is scheduled to appear in court July 9.

Online records show he has no other pending charges or previous criminal convictions in North Carolina.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
