ELLERBE — An man is facing two animal cruelty charges for alleged injuries on a dog caused by a collar.
According to an arrest warrant, 53-year-old Jeffery Lynn Dawkins, of Ellerbe Hatchery Road, is accused of restraining a Great Dane to a cable runner, causing the collar to leave a “serious injury” on the dog from the base of its neck to the back end of its skull.
The incident date is listed as April 13.
Records show Dawkins appeared before a magistrate the following day and was released on a written promise to appear in court on May 8.
He is facing one misdemeanor charge each of cruelty to animals and restraining dogs in a cruel manner.
Online court records show Dawkins has charges pending in Cumberland County of hit and run, fleeing to elude arrest, resisting a public officer, larceny of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen motor vehicle.
His next court date on those charges is scheduled for May 16.
Dawkins has a slew of previous convictions throughout the Sandhills, according to records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction.
He was last released from prison in 2014 after serving more than five years for being a habitual felon, fleeing to elude arrest and larceny over $1,000.
Dawkins was first convicted in 1989 for receiving stolen goods and two traffic violations. Two years later, he was found guilty of breaking and entering in Montgomery County.
His first stint in prison was from November of 1994 to April of 1996 for a cheating property or services conviction in Richmond County and writing bad checks in Union, Moore, Cumberland, Scotland and Richmond counties.
He spent five months behind bars in 1998 for obtaining property by false pretenses, larceny by an employee, attempted breaking and entering and misdemeanor larceny.
Baldwin went back to prison for 10 months in 2000-2001 when his probation was revoked following a conviction of unauthorized use of motor conveyance in Moore County.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
