Fabric of Richmond County Woven into US Olympic Team Jackets

ROCKINGHAM – The world’s top athletes are gathered in South Korea, preparing for the opening ceremonies of the 2018 XXIII Winter Olympics. PyeongChang, the nation’s capital, was selected as the host city for the event in July 2011.

This marks the first time that South Korea has hosted the Winter Olympics, and the second Olympics held in the country since the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.

For those planning to watch the opening ceremonies of the PyeongChang 2018 XXIII Winter Olympics, or watch the events throughout the next two weeks, they may want to take a second look at the Team USA parade uniforms, designed by Ralph Lauren and made in part by International Textile Group’s (ITG) Burlington and Cone Denim divisions.

International Textile Group (ITG) is a diversified American fabric maker based in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Team USA Olympians will be wearing heated parka jackets and Ralph Lauren designed jeans. According to an article in the Triad Business Journal, the uniforms will have “some textile elements coming from several Triad manufacturing facilities.”

“The red, white and blue fabric that you see on the parka jackets was woven at the Burlington plant in Rockingham and was finished at our facility in Burlington, N.C.,” revealed Delores Sides, Director of Corporate Communications & Human Resources at ITG Headquarters in Greensboro.

She stated that ITG is proud to be part of the clothing that Team USA will be wearing. Burlington Industries LLC Richmond Plant is located at 740 Old Cheraw Highway.

The Rockingham plant has been involved in previous Olympic years as well.

“We have worked with Ralph Lauren in the past in developing the Olympic uniforms,” Sides said. “This will be the third Olympics that ITG has supplied fabrics for official Team USA clothing.”

The Olympics are scheduled to take place from February 9 to the 25, with the opening ceremonies to be aired on NBC Friday from 8-11 p.m.
