Fire destroys outbuilding, burns half-acre northwest of Hamlet

The Hamlet Fire Department starts clearing the scene of a fire that destroyed an outbuilding on Kristy Lane.

HAMLET — Crews were on the scene for about two hours for a backyard burn that got out of control Monday evening.

Richard Lassiter, assistant chief of the Hamlet Fire Department, said crews were dispatched to 147 Kristy Lane, off of County Home Road, at 6:22 p.m.

He said the fire started off in a burn barrel, but wound up destroying an outbuilding and scorching half an acre of surrounding woodland.

The N.C. Forest Service also responded.

No injuries were reported.

The scene was cleared at 8:31.
