Hamlet Crime Report: Variety of Investigations, Incidents and Arrests

HAMLET – The Hamlet Police Department was relatively busy over the weekend, reporting a series of events from Friday, January 26, through Sunday, January 28.

An incident of injury to personal property was reported on the evening of Friday, January 26.  Residents of 509 Cherry Street discovered that the gas cap cords on their three vehicles had been severed.  This case is under current investigation by the HPD and anyone with pertinent information should call them at 910-582-2551.

A report of a breaking and entering with larceny was received by HPD at 11:31 a.m. on Saturday, January 27.  Officers responded to a residence on Beeler Avenue in the Briarwood area to find that a 60-inch television, various items of women’s clothing and several blue plastic containers had been stolen.  It is estimated that the theft occurred between the hours of 9 and 11 a.m. on that day.  This case is under current investigation by the Hamlet Police Department and anyone with pertinent information should call them at 910-582-2551.

Two arrests were made and a criminal summons was also served by HPD over the same period.

The first of the arrests occurred in conjunction with an automobile accident at 4:09 p.m. on Friday, January 26.  HPD telecommunications reported that the operator of the vehicle, Daniel Anthony Rivera of 102 Bradford Street, Hamlet, had an outstanding order for arrest for speeding and driving while his license was revoked.  Rivera was subsequently arrested and is being held in the Richmond County Jail under a $5000 secured bond with a trial date of February 15.

The second arrest was made on Sunday, January 28, at 3:58 p.m.   Officers were dispatched to a reported disturbance at 718 Henderson Street.  While en route, the officer was notified that the suspect had fled the scene.  The officer then observed a vehicle matching the description of that of the suspect, initiated pursuit and stopped the vehicle.

Subsequent to questioning, Charles Kenny Knight of 167 Halmark Avenue, Hamlet, was arrested and charged with two counts of injury to personal property, communicating threats, and resisting a public officer.  Knight is being held in the Richmond County Jail under a $2500 secured bond with a trial date of February 16.

Another incident of the weekend occurred in response to a report of harassing telephone calls.  On Sunday, January 28, at 5:08 p.m., Nicole Jones Wilkes of 103 Willard Street, Hamlet, was cited for harassing calls dating back to April 24, of 2017.  Wilkes was served with a criminal summons with a trial date of February 13.

All persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
