Hamlet Police arrest one, issue citations during Friday traffic stops

HAMLET — An effort to step up patrols around town led to more than 50 citations and one arrest last week.

The Hamlet Police Department on Friday sent out its Saturation Patrol Observation Team to look for traffic violations citywide, according to Capt. Randy Dover.

The first team patrolled from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and levied the following charges: two for expired tags; one for driving with a revoked license; two for having a revoked tag; one for an inspection violation; one for having no insurance; one for having no operator’s license; one for failing to carry the vehicle’s registration; one for a stop sign violation; one for a stop light violation; and one for possessing a revoked license.

Officers also arrested one individual who had an order for arrest for failure to appear in court.

The second saturation was from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. and officers issued the following citations: one for having a revoked tag; two for having an expired tag; two for having no operator’s license; one for driving with a revoked license; one for having no insurance; one for a seat belt violation; one for a headlight violation; one for an inspection violation; and one for failing to carry a driver’s license.

The department also set up two checkpoints, one at Main Street and N.C. 38, the other at N.C. 177 and Jefferson Street.

Between both checkpoints, officers charged: two for child violations; seven for having expired tags; six for driving with a revoked license; three for inspection violations; one for having an altered tag; one for having a fictitious tag; one for having no insurance; four for having no operator’s license; one for failing to carry the vehicle’s registration; and one for failing to register the vehicle.

One person was also charged for possession of drug paraphernalia, which is a misdemeanor.

The Hamlet Police Department was assisted by the Laurinburg and Maxton police departments.
