Hamlet Police Department offers tips to prevent theft during holidays

HAMLET — Police are urging residents to take precautions to prevent becoming victims of theft in the holiday season.

With some travelling out of town, Capt. Randy Dover of the Hamlet Police Department, said he can’t stress enough how important it is to keep your doors locked, especially on vehicles that may be left at home.

“It’s easy pickins for thieves,” he said.

Hamlet and other parts of Richmond County have seen numerous vehicle break-ins and many times, those cars and trucks are left unlocked.

For those ordering presents from Amazon and other online retailers, boxes delivered and left on the porch become easy targets.

“Every year we have calls on people stealing packages,” he said.

He also encourages residents who may score big-ticket items on Black Friday, such as televisions, to make sure those boxes aren’t just sitting around outside in plain view. That would be an indicator to would-be thieves that you have something expensive inside.

Dover also suggested that neighbors keep an eye on each others’ homes and report suspicious activity to law enforcement.
