Hamlet Police: Man got change for counterfeit bill

HAMLET — A man is facing criminal charges after police say he used funny money to exchange for smaller bills.

Investigators with the Hamlet Police Department say 21-year-old David Lee Campbell, of Palisade Circle in Rockingham, gave a Food Lion cashier a fake $100 bill in exchange for five $20 bills on March 9.

The department posted a still photograph of Campbell from a store surveillance camera on its Facebook page Wednesday, asking for the public’s help to identify him.

Campbell was arrested Thursday and charged with one felony count of obtaining property by false pretenses and a misdemeanor count of criminal use of a counterfeit trademark bill.

He was released on a written promise to appear in court on April 18.

Online records show Campbell has no other pending charges or previous criminal convictions in North Carolina.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
