HAMLET POLICE: Shotgun, cocaine, pot found in felon’s home

HAMLET — A man turned himself in Friday after law enforcement searched his home earlier in the week, finding drugs and a shotgun.

Police Chief Tommy McMasters said the Hamlet Police Department, along with help from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team, served a search warrant at the Rose Street home of 33-year-old Calvin Kemonde Jones following a tip from a witness who had reportedly observed drugs and weapons in the home on multiple occasions.

As a convicted felon, Jones is barred from owning a firearm.

The warrant was served the afternoon of Dec. 4.

According to the inventory list included with the search warrant, officers seized:

  • a single-barrel .410 shotgun
  • a box of .45-caliber bullets
  • a cellphone
  • a gun holster
  • a black glove
  • a bag of a “green leafy substance”
  • a bag of a “white powdery substance”
  • a grinder

McMasters said Jones was not home at the time.

Police say Jones turned himself in at the Richmond County Magistrate’s office on Friday. His warrant was served by the Rockingham Police Department.

He is charged with one felony count each of possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of cocaine, as well as one misdemeanor count of possession of up to a half-ounce of marijuana.

Jones was released on a $25,000 unsecured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 19.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Jones was convicted in 2013 of a felony, attempted fleeing to elude arrest, and two misdemeanor counts of assaulting or making threats against a government official.

Later that year he was convicted of one misdemeanor count each of possession of Schedule VI controlled substance and use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

Jones was given probation in both cases.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
