The Lady Raider basketball team is off to a 3-1 start, it’s best run to begin the season since 2009. Covington, a three-year varsity starter, is known for her fast and physical play in the post, which presents lots of scoring opportunities for her and the team. “ON THE COURT” WITH JAKERRA COVINGTON

Covington has been a staple of the Lady Raider basketball program the last two seasons and she’s off to a fast start as a junior. Through four games this season, she’s averaging 11 points per game, which is second only to fellow junior teammate Jayla McDougald (13 PPG).

As one of the taller and more physical players on the team, Covington isn’t afraid to work hard down low in the paint to collect points. Last week, the Lady Raiders earned a non-conference win against Southern Lee High School and lost a closely contested Sandhills Athletic Conference matchup to visiting Purnell Swett High School.

In both games, Covington was the leading scorer for Richmond, and was the lone Lady Raider to reach double figures in both games. Against the Lady Cavs, Covington netted a season-high 18 points, draining 11 points in the first half. She followed that up with a 12-point performance against the Lady Rams.

Because of her speed, head coach Teddy Moseley has praised Covington’s ability to help run the press on defense. She had a big hand in forcing several turnovers against Southern Lee and Purnell Swett, and Moseley called her the team’s “Swiss army knife.”
