HAMLET – The competitive spirit of Bingo players who just happen to be over the age of 55 was quite evident on Tuesday, August 21, as National Senior Citizens Day was celebrated by the group of more than thirty seniors around the brightly-decorated tables at the Hamlet Senior Center.

This holiday was originally recognized in 1935, on August 14, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act. The date was changed to August 21 by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. The holiday was established “in honor of senior citizens who have made positive contributions in their community,” and also “to bring awareness of the social, health, and economic issues” of older Americans.

Former Center Director Susan Sellers, as well as the regular center staff, were on hand to assist with the festivities. Darryl Bryant of the Senior Guide Post Insurance Agency of Charlotte was the guest Bingo caller, making him quite popular with all of the winners. His company offers a variety of insurance plans, including long term care to final expense insurance, and he is available to meet with individuals as well as groups. Bryant’s number is (704) 258-6126.

While waiting for pizza to be delivered, the seniors enjoyed fresh-popped popcorn and sodas as they played Bingo. A multitude of prizes was available for the winners, who took their time to make sure of their choices. After the pizza lunch was served—cheese, pepperoni, and sausage were available—the Bingo games resumed and continued until all of the available prizes had been won.
