HAMLET — The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement at 6:22 p.m. warning of a line of storms likely to produce flooding in the Sandhills.
According to the NWS: “… Doppler radar was tracking an area of showers and thunderstorms producing heavy rain along a line extending from near Raeford to 8 miles northeast of Chavistown. Movement was northeast at 20 mph.”
Forecasters warn that heavy rains could produce minor flooding and there may be deadly cloud-to-ground lightning associated with the storms.
Downpours could decrease visibility and create ponding on roadways, causing hazards for drivers.
The storms are expected to affect Richmond, Scotland, Cumberland Hoke and Harnett counties.
Although the statement is set to expire at 7:15 p.m., thunderstorms and showers are predicted throughout the night with skies clearing on Tuesday.
A slight chance of rain is forecast Tuesday evening with heavier showers expected on Wednesday.
Temperatures this week are expected to range from lows in the lower sixties to highs in the mid-80s.
The threat of weekend rains forced school officials to move Richmond Senior High School’s graduation indoors on Saturday.
While Richmond County was spared the heavy predicted rainfall, other counties including Pitt and Catawba saw flooding.
