ROCKINGHAM – Bryan Land, County Manager of Richmond County, announced Wednesday that due to Hurricane Florence an emergency shelter is being established at Richmond Senior High School, located at 838 North US Highway 1, on Thursday at 1 p.m.

Shelters are being set up in coordination with the American Red Cross, Richmond County Department of Social Services, Richmond County Health Department and Richmond County Schools, and will provide shelter and food for Richmond County citizens who are concerned about staying in their home during the hurricane.

Donna Wright, Emergency Management Coordinator for Richmond County, said all persons coming to the shelter should bring bedding, flashlights, special medicines and foods, including foods and other needs for babies.

If transportation is needed, call the Transportation Coordinator at telephone number 910-417-4948. Many disabled and elderly persons who live at home may require assistance in order to relocate to the open shelters. If there is a mobility issue and require special transportation needs, please contact the number above and let them know so all transportation needs are addressed.

It’s also encouraged that any medically-fragile citizens who go to the shelter have a caregiver to take care of the individual’s needs at all times. The shelter at RSHS will not have medical supervision to meet the medical fragile individual’s needs.

Pets are allowed at the shelter located at Richmond, but pet owners must bring food, cages and other items to assist with taking care of pets. Pet owners must also provide documentation of rabies vaccination. The shelter can accommodate dogs, cats, birds and small animals such as hamsters and gerbils. Individuals must take care of their animals to include but not limited to walking and feeding.

For more information about shelters and what to bring, call 910-417-4947.
