ROCKINGHAM – Richmond County Schools superintendent Dr. Cindy Goodman announced Tuesday afternoon that all RCS events, including classes and athletics, had been closed or postponed for Thursday and Friday this week in preparation for Hurricane Florence.
At the time of this publication, Hurricane Florence had been downgraded to a Category 2 storm, but its wide range could potentially impact the Richmond County area over the next couple of days.
Richmond Senior High School, located at 838 US Highway 1 in Rockingham, has been converted into an emergency shelter, and will be open to those in need starting at 1 p.m. Thursday. Read more here.
Ricky Young, Richmond’s athletic director, confirmed that all of the school’s athletic events are postponed until a later date.
Earlier in the week, several of Richmond’s programs moved up their scheduled games and matches to Wednesday, but the closing of other counties’ schools kept them from happening. The only two teams to participate in regularly scheduled events were the volleyball and girls golf teams.
The Lady Raider volleyball team, coached by Ashleigh Larsen, won its third-straight Sandhills Athletic Conference match Tuesday. It beat Seventy-First High School in four sets, 3-1, and now sit alone in third place in the SAC standings. Juniors Madison Jordan and Layne Maultsby had a big night at the serving line, blasting six and 10 aces, respectively.
Richmond’s girls golf team travelled to Fayetteville the same afternoon and took third place for the second week in a row. The round was cut short due to rain in the area, as the Lady Raiders have yet to play a complete 18-hole round this season. Junior Hailey Miller celebrated her birthday by posting Richmond’s best score with a 41 (+5).
The Richmond varsity and junior varsity football teams were essentially unaffected, as both programs are in their bye weeks. Look for an update on head coach Bryan Till’s team in Friday’s edition.
