Man charged in fatal Christmas Eve wreck that killed county employee

ROCKINGHAM — A man is facing a manslaughter charge in connection to a fatal Christmas Eve wreck.

According to a report made available Thursday, 56-year-old Halario Aguirre of Ellerbe made a left turn near the ABC Store on East Broad Avenue in front of 38-year-old Charles Alexander Bowden, who was driving a Kawasaki motorcycle.

Aguirre was stopped in the center turn lane before making the turn and failed to see Bowden, according to the report.

Bowden, who was killed, was estimated to be traveling at 40 mph at the time of impact; Aguirre was traveling at 5 mph.

Although the report lists that Aguirre was not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the wreck, a test was performed and results are pending.

Aguirre was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, a felony, and was cited for an unsafe movement resulting in a crash with serious bodily injury and driving with a revoked license that was revoked because of impairment.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Aguirre was convicted of a Level 5 DWI on Dec. 12, 2018 for driving impaired the previous August.

He remains in the Richmond County Jail under a $150,000 secured bond. His next court date is scheduled for Jan. 9.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Bowden was a former firefighter with the Northside Volunteer Fire Department and worked with the Richmond County Water Department. His funeral was held Monday.
