RALEIGH, N.C. –Today Senator Tom McInnis (R-Richmond) issued a statement on the passing of Sergeant Millie Dunn Veasey.

In 1942 Veasey volunteered to go to war, serving faithfully in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC). She was sent to the European theater where she worked in both England and France, returning home in 1945 as a Staff Sergeant. She then enrolled at Saint Augustine’s College where she received a degree while also working as executive secretary to President James Boyer. She subsequently attended North Carolina Central University and obtained another degree. After graduation, Veasey taught school, served as a community supporter, and worked as a Sunday school advisor. Veasey was a leader in the fight for civil rights, where she served as the first female African-American president of the Wake County NAACP.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ms. Millie Veasey of Wake County. Last year we were honored to celebrate her 99th Birthday and her service in World War II with a special recognition at the N.C. Senate.  Her life is a shining example of service over self as she was a World War II Veteran, a Professional Educator, a Civil Rights Advocate and Lover of All People. I consider it a great honor to have known her and it is with great sympathy that I extend my prayers and thoughts to her family and friends.”
