Moss beats Brewer for N.C. House District 66 seat

ROCKINGHAM — Ben Moss is heading to Raleigh.

Moss, currently on the Richmond County Board of Commissioners, won the N.C. House District 66 seat in Tuesday’s election against Rep. Scott Brewer.

The district includes Richmond and Montgomery counties and the eastern sliver of Stanly County.

Moss said the support was humbling, since not many people know him in the other two counties.

Records with the N.C. State Board of Elections show Moss handily won Montgomery and Stanly counties with around 65%.

The race was a little tighter in Richmond, the home county to both candidates, with Moss taking 56% of the vote.

“I’m going to try to represent the district to the best of my ability,” Moss said. “I’m eager to get up there and see if I can make something happen.”

Brewer was appointed to the seat by Gov. Roy Cooper in 2019 when Ken Goodman was appointed to the N.C. Industrial Commission.

That seat has been held by a Democrat for decades, including former state Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin and his wife, the late Melanie Goodwin.

Moss was the first Republican elected to Richmond County Board of Commissioners in more than a century.

He won the Republican primary in March against Montgomery County’s Joey Davis. Although Davis won both Montgomery and Stanly counties, Moss’ support in Richmond was enough to put him ahead by 847 votes.

Davis secured nearly 47% of the vote in 2018 when he ran against Goodman.

Moss’ seat on the county board will have to be filled.

He also expressed congratulations to Jeff Smart, Toni Maples and Andy Grooms for winning seats in that race.

“I think that they’ll do a great job,” he said.

All results are unofficial until canvassing.
