Raleigh – NCDP Chairman Wayne Goodwin traveled to Robeson, Scotland, Richmond, Anson, and Union counties this week on the fifth leg of the North Carolina Democratic Party’s Rural NC Listening Tour. The tour aims to have real conversations with voters in rural areas who feel left behind by the Republican-led General Assembly and the increasing rural-urban divide.
In each stop, Chairman Goodwin emphasized Democrats efforts to talk about policies that affect people’s daily lives – health care, education, the local economy – and issues that bring us together, not divide us.
- In Robeson County Chair Goodwin met with over 40 local leaders and activists for breakfast in Lumberton. The chair discussed the pillars of Our Carolina Promise and attendees expressed concerns about voting restrictions and the need for more well-paying jobs in their community.
- In Scotland County Chair Goodwin met with 45 local leaders and elected officials over lunch at the Main Table in Laurinburg. Attendees discussed the importance of this year’s midterm election and the need to focus on the human issues impacting all North Carolinians – access to healthcare, education, and the ballot box.
- In Richmond County the chair held a roundtable discussion with local leaders in his home county. Chair Goodwin highlighted the party’s need to communicate our values to voters and discussed the kitchen table concerns that are most important to rural North Carolinians.
- Chair Goodwin ended his tour in Monroe with a joint meeting of local party leaders, activists, and elected officials from Union and Anson counties. Attendees shared their desire for improved education and quality, well-paying jobs in their community. Anson and Union were once large manufacturing areas. Now, many residents must travel to Charlotte to work.
Chair Goodwin’s next stop on the Rural NC Listening Tour will take him to Western North Carolina.
