ROCKINGHAM — An accused drunk driver is facing charges after police say he crashed into the Harrington Square fountain early Sunday morning.

According to a wreck report from the Rockingham Police Department, Phillip Ray Greene Jr, of Rockingham, was driving west in a 2015 Nissan Versa Note at 50 mph down East Washington Street just after 1 a.m. March 1.

The posted speed limit through downtown is 20 mph.

Greene reportedly drove straight past the yield sign instead of going to the right around the square, over a curbing with planted flowers and came to rest after hitting the fountain.

Police obtained a blood sample and seized a Smith & Wesson .380-caliber handgun, according to a report.

The damage to the shrubbery, landscaping and fountain is estimated at $7,500. The damage estimate on Greene’s vehicle is $8,500.

Greene was charged with driving while impaired and cited for speeding and reckless driving.

No court date yet appears for Greene in online court records.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Greene was convicted of misdemeanor larceny in 1990.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
