HAMLET – Students at RichmondCC are preparing for publication of the inaugural issue of Torch. The magazine, Torch, which derives its name from RichmondCC’s logo, will be available in both digital and print form in April.

The magazine will include poems, short stories, and works of art by more than 20 RichmondCC students, faculty and staff members in addition to showcasing the works of several Richmond and Scotland County community members.

In its inaugural issue, Torch will also include an interview with 2014 NC Literary Hall of Fame inductee and current NC Poet Laureate Dr. Shelby Stephenson. The magazine will also include original poetry from the Laureate. According to Jenny Teague, co-founding faculty advisor for Torch, the magazine will also include interviews with Monika Teal, a former NC Visual Arts Fellow, whose work has been showcased internationally, and Lumbee artist, Loretta Oxendine, whose work is displayed at the Smithsonian’s NMAI. Teague indicated that student working on the magazine have been able to meet and attend a book signing by U.S. Poet Laureate, Tracy K. Smith as well.

Morgan Cain, Martina Litty and Teague founded the magazine with the goal of “connecting students with the writers, artists, and professionals they hope to become.” Cain stated, “This magazine is a great way to ensure that RichmondCC students are able network with North Carolina writers, artists, and publishers. As a college, RichmondCC has a long history of creating these kinds of unique opportunities for students in their respective fields.” Teague reiterated, “This magazine is special because it offers an opportunity for students and community members to publish their creative work and build their portfolios for academic and professional opportunities. Artists, writers, and publishers from around the state are already anticipating the magazine’s publication and we know this will open the door of opportunity for the talented students whose work will be showcased alongside more notable authors and artists.”

Anyone interested in submitting their work is invited to submit poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and artwork to Torch at torchmagazine@richmondcc.edu.
