Richmond County coronavirus case count rises to 21

ROCKINGHAM — Health officials announced one additional case of the coronavirus Tuesday afternoon, bringing the county’s count to 21.

According to a chart included in the latest press release, the individual is 58 years old.

The youngest patient to contract the coronavirus is a 9-year-old, health officials announced Sunday. The others range in age from 31-82.

A map shows that 14 of the patients are from Rockingham, six are from Hamlet and one is from Hoffman.

Health and Human Service Director Dr. Tommy Jarrell says that five of the county’s cases are believed to be from out-of-county work-related travel and four are connected to a nursing home in Pinehurst. The rest are believed to be community spread.

Two Richmond County residents have died due to complications related to COVID-19, according to Jarrell. Another two are currently hospitalized and the remaining 17 are in home isolation

He said Tuesday that 425 residents have been tested and of the returned results, 371 have been negative.

Jarrell also said he is unable to report any recoveries at this time.

According to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, 6,764 state residents in 93 counties have tested positive for the COVID-19 infection. Of those, 179 have died.

However, the state’s numbers don’t coincide with those from the counties.

DHHS shows only 67 cases in neighboring Moore County, but the Health Department there lists 95 cases in a press release issued Monday announcing its fourth and fifth deaths.

There have been 903 cases and 53 deaths at 37 nursing homes across the state, according to DHHS. There are also 505 cases, including five attributed deaths, at nine state correctional facilities.

“Individuals should be referred by their primary healthcare provider, Health Department, or by calling the COVID-19 hotline at 910-417-4947 for COVID-19 testing,” Jarrell said. “Collection samples for COVID-19 are being collected through FirstHealth and the Health Department as needed.”

The Richmond County testing site has been moved from the old Sandhills Regional Hospital to the outpatient parking lot of FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond in Rockingham.

There is also a site in West End.
