UPDATE: Richmond County coronavirus cases not related

ROCKINGHAM — As of 2 p.m., April 8, 2020, Richmond County has two laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The first case was an individual who is believed to have contracted COVID-19 from their workplace, which is located outside of Richmond County. The second case is also an individual who is believed to have contracted COVID-19 outside of Richmond County from another individual who had traveled out of North Carolina and had also tested positive for COVID-19. The two Richmond County cases have no connection. 

At this time, 284 individuals have been tested for COVID-19 in Richmond County. Two positive COVID-19 test results have been received and 252 negative test results have been received. 

The Richmond County Health Department reminds everyone about mass gathering restrictions (no more than 10) and social distancing (six feet of separation). With the upcoming Easter weekend, family and friends are highly encouraged to refrain from large gatherings due to the easy spread of this virus. Hopefully, we can all resume our much needed time with family and friends soon. 

There is currently NO curfew in Richmond County. 

You do not need any kind of paperwork to travel to and from work. 

As of 5:30 a.m.: 

  • 79% of North Carolina COVID-19 deaths have been age 65 and over. 
  • North Carolina has reported 3,426 cases of COVID-19. 
  • 386 are currently being hospitalized in NC with COVID-19. 
  • 74% of COVID-19 deaths in North Carolina at this point have been males. 
  • 41% of all NC cases are ages 25-49. 

COVID-19 Testing Individuals should be referred by their primary healthcare provider, Health Department, or by calling the COVID-19 hotline at 910-417-4947 for COVID-19 testing. Collection samples for COVID-19 are being collected through First Health, the Health Department and other health providers as needed. The location for the COVID-19 testing referrals is the former Sandhills Regional Hospital located on Highway 74 in Hamlet. The testing site is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-1.p.m. Each person will be screened for symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath) to determine if the COVID-19 test should be collected. If you need medical attention before the next scheduled drive-thru clinic for COVID-19 symptoms, please contact your health care provider, the Health Department, or call the COVID-19 hotline. For urgent or emergency needs regarding COVID-19, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
