ROCKINGHAM — Voters will soon be able to decide which candidates of their political parties will move forward to the General Election in November.
Early voting begins Thursday, with the party primaries being held March 3.
Contrary to a mailer from Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg, only unaffiliated voters are allowed to vote in any primary. Those registered with a party must vote — if they vote — in the primary of the political party with which they are registered.
Last Friday was the final day to register ahead of the primary or switch parties.
With the primaries coming up, Richmond County Elections Director Connie Kelly wants voters to remember that a photo ID will not be required for this election.
A federal district court blocked North Carolina’s voter photo ID requirement — which was approved by referendum in 2018 — from taking place until further order of the court, Kelly said.
“With this in mind, the Richmond County Board of Elections would like to ask voters to be patient, be kind, and be tolerable of the ruling,” Kelly continued. “Just know that we do not make law. Our job is to implement it and make sure we follow the law and the procedures that have been put in place by the N.C. State Board of Elections in compliance with North Carolina General Statutes.”
She added that the individuals working at the Early Voting site and Election Day polling places are hired and instructed by the Richmond County Board of Elections under the direction of the state board.
“Precinct election officials (poll workers) represent all voters, are of different political party affiliations, and are there to ensure fair and honest elections,” Kelly said. “They are paid to serve, but they are still basically volunteering their time and most have been recommended by their political party.”
