ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County’s COVID-19 case count nears the 300 mark with the addition of more than a dozen new cases on Wednesday.
The Richmond County Health Department reports that the month is starting off 16 more residents having tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the county’s total to 296.
The number of active cases also jumped to 94, with two listed as being hospitalized and 92 under home isolation.
Four of the new cases involve children 18 years old or younger. The total number of cases per age group is listed below.
Of those tested, 2,288 have received a negative result.
The Health Department shows that 195 patients have recovered.
The county has also reported seven COVID-19-related deaths since late March, with five of them occurring during the month of June. Two deaths were reported earlier this week.
Richmond County has experienced a recent spike, with 67 new cases reported since June 22.
Stanly County has also seen a spike, rising from 82 cases on June 1 — when Richmond had 163 — to 394 total cases on July 1.
The state also set a new one-day record high with 1,843 new cases reported on Wednesday, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. The previous record was 1,768 set on June 12.

All numbers except Moore are from DHHS, which is from the local health department, as there is a discrepancy with the state. DHHS is reporting 15 fewer than the county.
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, which last updated its numbers on June 30, is reporting 373 cases in Chesterfield County and 307 in Marlboro County.
