HAMLET — Following a closed session Thursday, the Richmond County Board of Education approved the hiring of 12 new teachers and one teacher assistant.
All teachers, who are full-time, will begin Aug. 10 and all but one are replacing other faculty who have left the district.
Erin Norris, who will be an academic coach at East Rockingham Elementary, and Cherice Washington, who will be an English teacher at Richmond Senior High School, are both rehires.
Three of the new hires — Nicholas Locklear, Ryan Butler and Susan Carlson — will go to Rockingham Middle School.
Locklear, who has a B.S. in Physical Education from St. Andrews University, will fill a new science position; and Butler, who has a B.S. in Communication and Media from N.C. State University, will teach English.
There is no position listed for Carlson, who obtained a B.S. in Emergency and Disaster Management from American Military University.
Kimberly Collins, who has a M.A. in Reading Education from UNC Pembroke will be an Exception Children teacher at Cordova Middle School.
Linda Byrd, a new math teacher for Hamlet Middle, has a B.S. in Elementary Education from Tennessee Temple University.
Kaitlin Douphinette will teach at West Rockingham Elementary, though no specific grade is listed in the personnel report. She has a B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Slippery Rock University.
Travion Jones, a graduate of UNC Pembroke with a B.S. in Exercise and Health Science, will be the new social studies teacher at the Ninth Grade Academy.
Maurice Stuart, with a B.A. in Business Administration from Winston-Salem State University, will teach business classes at Cordova; and Bryan Seth Brown, who holds a similar degree from St. Andrew’s University, will be a business teacher split between Hamlet and Rockingham Middle schools.
Ashleigh Buie, who obtained a B.A. in History from UNCP, will be an English teacher at the high school.
Jamie Brooks was also hired as a teacher assistant at Fairview Heights Elementary.
The personnel report also includes several resignations, retirements and position changes.
RSHS math teacher Dennis Toney resigned June 15 because of a family relocation; and Haven Harrelson, an interventionist in the Central Office, will retire Oct. 1.
Melanie Taylor, who was an academic coach at Cordova will now be a Kindergarten through sixth-grade teacher at Monroe Avenue Elementary; and Tim Watkins is now a computer lab assistant at East Rockingham.
There will also be three administrative changes, which went into effect Thursday.
East Rockingham Assistant Principal Kevin Wallace is the new principal at MIneral Springs Elementary and Yvonne Gilmer, principal of L.J. Bell Elementary, is now an assistant principal at East Rockingham.
Gilmer is replaced by Mineral Springs Principal Jennifer Beck.
