Richmond County Schools superintendent to be honored at reception

HAMLET— Outgoing Richmond County Schools Superintendent Dr. Cindy Goodman will be honored for her educational career Monday afternoon.

A retirement celebration is scheduled for 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Cole Auditorium Monday afternoon, with special remarks beginning at 4 p.m. The community is invited to attend.

Goodman announced her Jan. 1 retirement at the Board of Education’s November meeting.Goodman was hired as superintendent in 2014, following the retirement of Dr. George Norris, who held the post for seven years. Before that, she had worked as a teacher, principal and assistant principal, before serving as assistant superintendent under Norris during her 30-plus-year career.

In her retirement announcement last month, Goodman boasted that test scores, attendance and teacher morale was up, while suspensions were down.

She is married to state Rep. Ken Goodman, D-Richmond, who was just re-elected to his fifth term in the North Carolina House of Representatives.

As for her future, Goodman told the RO that she has “no immediate plans.”

“I will take a little time to just take a deep breath,” she said. “Ken and I do want to travel some.”
