Sheriff’s Department Makes Quick Arrest in Relation to Recent Break-Ins, Larcenies

ROCKINGHAM – Richmond County Sheriff’s Department investigations led to the quick arrest of a suspect in multiple break-ins and thefts. 

On Monday, July 9th, Roland Eugene Chavis of 38 Hannah Pickett Avenue, Rockingham, was arrested by the Sheriff’s Department after investigations into recent break-ins at local businesses.

The events leading up to that arrest were as follows: 

On Tuesday, July 3rd, Chavis allegedly broke into a convenience store on U.S. 1 south of Rockingham where he stole cigarettes. 

On Friday, July 6th, Chavis allegedly broke into the same convenience store and stole approximately $520 in cash. 

On Sunday, July 8th, Chavis allegedly broke into a garage on Mill Road and stole approximately $100 in cash. 

On Monday, July 9th, Chavis allegedly broke into the IGA grocery store located on Airport Road and again stole cigarettes.

Chavis was charged with four counts of breaking and entering as well as four counts of larceny after breaking and entering.

He was processed into the Richmond County Jail under a $25,000 secured bond. 

Chavis was recently released from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety on June 14, 2018 where he had been incarcerated for a break-in that he committed at the same convenience store five years ago on May 28th, 2013.

All defendants are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
