HEALing Communities Study: Developing and Testing an Integrated Approach to Address the Opioid Crisis 

The HEALing Communities Study will test the immediate impact of implementing an integrated set of evidence-based interventions across healthcare, behavioral health, justice, and other community-based settings to prevent and treat opioid misuse and Opioid Use Disorders (OUD) within highly affected communities.

Scholarship Application Period for the 2019 Winter School is Now Open

Scholarship applications for Winter School are accepted between October 1st and October 31.

Twenty (20) Foundation scholarships will be awarded to persons in the following disciplines:

·  Professionals working full-time in the treatment field.

·  Professionals working full-time in the areas of intervention, prevention, or education.

·  Retirees desiring to maintain certification status.

·  Para-professionals and substance abuse volunteers.

·  Students working towards substance abuse certification.

·  Nurses

 

Dose of Prevention Challenge

Help raise awareness of the dangers of prescription (Rx) drug abuse and over-the-counter (OTC) cough medicine abuse during National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month in October, and take part in the Dose of Prevention Challenge.

First Place

·  Wins the prestigious Dose of Prevention Award and is honored at CADCA’s National Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C.

·  Receives a $1,500 cash award for their coalition

·  A full scholarship to Forum (covers registration and travel expenses)

·  Recognition in CADCA’s publications

Evidence-Based Practices Resource Center

 This new Evidence-Based Practices Resource Center aims to provide communities, clinicians, policy-makers and others in the field with the information and tools they need to incorporate evidence-based practices into their communities or clinical settings. The Resource Center contains a collection of scientifically-based resources for a broad range of audiences, including Treatment Improvement Protocols, toolkits, resource guides, clinical practice guidelines, and other science-based resources.

2017 Survey Results of College-age Youth Drug and Alcohol Use

 The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Director, Dr. Nora Volkow discusses the 2017 Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey findings on substance use among college-age youth. Dr. Volkow briefly shares results on drug and alcohol use, including vaping and marijuana.

“What is Addiction” Video

 CADCA (Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America) and Addiction Policy Forum have partnered together to create “What is Addiction?” a video highlighting the nature of addiction and its effects on the human body, brain and development. The video is a “crash course” about how to prevent substance use disorders, how addiction can hijack the brain, and what can be done when faced with addiction.

Non-Traditional Partners Help Pennsylvania Reduce Access to Prescription Opioids

Prevention practitioners in Blair County, Pennsylvania are employing new prevention efforts with “non-traditional” partners to combat the opioid crisis that has been overwhelming their communities. With funding from SAMHSA’s Partnerships for Success 2013 grant, the county’s substance misuse prevention and treatment agency, Blair Drug and Alcohol Partnerships, is forging relationships with real estate agents and funeral directors to reduce the availability of prescription drugs in the county.

Don’t treat e-cigarettes like cigarettes, say experts

“We’ve done so much to convince our youth that cigarettes and smoking are bad, and overall, it’s been a relatively successful campaign when you look at how much smoking has decreased and continued to decrease,” Olonoff said. “If teens use the device and they see it differently than the rest of the nicotine products, the researchers should adopt a different philosophical belief, too.” 

Teen cannabis use is not without risk to cognitive development

In a context where policies and attitudes regarding substance use are being reconsidered, this research highlights the importance of protecting youth from the adverse effects of consumption through greater investment in drug-prevention programs.
