ROCKINGHAM – As February 4 draws near, the stakes continue to grow exponentially.  Millions of Americans each week find themselves with their hearts broken and dreams of their team taking home a Super Bowl title dashed, while others find themselves filled with joy over their team’s remarkable success.

Meanwhile, millions more are beginning to form a whole new set of allegiances to teams they never paid attention to before.

But while all of this focus is being paid to the largest bowl game of the year, the Richmond County Humane Society is turning its focus to a “bowl game” all of its own.

The 2018 Fur Bowl, that is.

“The mission of the Humane Society of Richmond County is to work with Richmond County’s Animal Shelter and Control Program as they provide care at the shelter for the humane treatment of stray, abandoned, seized, surrounded or unwanted dogs, cats and other animals,” explained Corey Davis.

In addition to supporting spay and neuter programs which work to reduce the number of unwanted animals and corresponding euthanasia rates, the Humane Society works with local advocates and volunteers to find reputable rescues, foster homes and adoptions for shelter animals.

With so many programs to support and a limited amount of funding to do so with, hosting fundraisers isn’t just an option, but a necessity.

However, with so many different organizations competing for funding and support from the same pool of donors, the members of the Humane Society knew that they needed to do something a little more “outside of the box.”

And so, the idea for the 2018 Fur Bowl was launched.

Scheduled for Thursday, January 25, the 2018 Fur Bowl will be held at Pattan’s Downtown Grille in Rockingham from 5:45 to 8:45 p.m., and will be comprised of two aspects.

The first component of this event is a raffle.  Humane Society board members will be selling tickets from now through Bowl day for $20 each.  All proceeds go directly back to the organization and qualify their buyers for the chance to win one of three great prizes.

“The idea,” explained Davis, “is for three lucky people to win awesome gifts just in time for Super Bowl LII.”

One third place winner will walk away with a Tailgate Party Pack full of Super Bowl essentials, while another, second place, ticket holder will receive a four-burner Charbroil Gas Grill, which was generously donated by Swink Quality Oil.

The grand prize for this raffle is perhaps the most essential Super Bowl item to have – a top notch television.  One grand prize winner will take home a brand new, 50-inch Samsung 4K flatscreen TV.

The second aspect will be dinner.  Just by simply dinning at Pattan’s during the Fur Bowl event, attendees will be making a donation to the Humane Society’s cause.  After being approached by organization treasurer, Brandy Alfredson, restaurant owner Tim Pattan, has graciously offered to donate 10 percent of all proceeds from the meals served during the three-hour event.

The Richmond County Humane Society hopes that the community will stand behind it in this event and help them reach their goal of raising as much money as possible so it can continue to fund vet services for as many animals as possible.
