Rockingham Police Department Charges Two Men for Using Counterfeit Money; Find Stashed Handgun

ROCKINGHAM – Rockingham police officers responded to a relatively unusual call from the Food Lion on US Highway 74 last week. It was reported that two individuals were using what appeared to be counterfeit currency to make purchases.

Two suspects fitting the descriptions provided by Food Lion personnel were soon located inside of the nearby Subway.

During the process of questioning the suspects, further investigation led to the discovery of a hidden handgun in the Subway restroom.

The suspects were identified as Tobias Christopher Moore, 20, and Demetrius Bernard Hamilton, 20, both of Rockingham. Moore and Hamilton were ultimately arrested and charged as follows:

Moore was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon; possession of a firearm with an altered serial number; possession of five or more counterfeit instruments; obtaining property by false pretenses; and felony conspiracy.

Hamilton was charged with possession of five or more counterfeit instruments; attempt to obtain property by false pretenses; and felony conspiracy.

The suspects were transported to the Richmond County Jail and are being held on secured bonds. Moore was booked under a $15,000 bond, while Hamilton received a $10,000 bond. Both will appear in court on February 8.

All persons arrested are innocent until proven guilty in the court of law.
