U.S. 1 closed south of Rockingham after log truck flips at bypass

ROCKINGHAM — A major highway is temporarily shut down following a wreck late Thursday morning.

U.S. 1 is currently closed and covered with logs after a tractor-trailer flipped on its side coming from the U.S. 74 Bypass offramp, according to Chief Jeremy Chance with Cordova Fire and Rescue.

Chance said crews were dispatched at 9:48 a.m.

Traffic is being diverted down Springdale Drive to Old Cheraw Highway on the north side of the bypass, and down Rosalyn Road to Old Cheraw on the south side.

Chance said he expects the road to reopened by 2 p.m.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol is investigating.
