Warrant: East Rockingham felon with pending drug charges had handgun

ROCKINGHAM — A man still facing a half-dozen drug charges from April was arrested on a weapon charge this week.

Kristopher Shane Carpenter, of Mill Road, was in possession of a Lorcin 9mm handgun on Tuesday, according to an arrest warrant.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail on a charge of possession of a firearm by a felon. He remained there Thursday afternoon under a $25,000 secured bond.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office patrol division arrested Carpenter several months ago and charged him with one felony count each of possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin and maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance.

He is also charged with three misdemeanors: possession of up to a half-ounce of marijuana, possession of a Schedule III controlled substance and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

Online court records show he is scheduled to appear Aug. 8 on the drug charges and Aug. 29 on the firearm charge.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Carpenter was released from prison Dec. 14, 2018 after serving time on a post-release revocation.

Prior to that, he was serving time for a series of convictions from 2015 to 2018 for breaking and entering, assault on a female, battery of an unborn child and injury to personal property in Richmond County; and misdemeanor hit and run, driving with a revoked license and reckless driving in Scotland County.

Carpenter was previously convicted of several counts of larceny and breaking and entering dating back to 2007, records show.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
