Woman charged with operating illegal daycare after child dies near Ellerbe

ELLERBE — A woman charged in the death of a child in her care late last week is facing another charge.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office on Friday charged Dorothy Morgan Moore with operating an illegal daycare, investigators said on Monday.

Last week, Moore and Paige Elizabeth Black were each charged with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse causing serious bodily injury — both felonies — following the death of a 22-month-old boy.

They were each given a $30,000 secured bond.

Investigators say Moore was given an additional $10,000 secured bond for the illegal daycare charge and was bonded out at the magistrate’s office.

Sheriff James Clemmons told the RO last week that deputies responded to a call of an unresponsive toddler on Larry Parsons Road, between Ellerbe and Norman, on Thursday.

The child was given treatment and taken to an unnamed medical care facility where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff said investigators with the sheriff’s office determined that, at some point, the child had been left in a car.

Moore and Black are scheduled to appear in court July 2, court records show.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
