Ava Thompson: The Official Richmond County Female Student-Athlete of the Week

ROCKINGHAM — Junior bowler Ava Thompson has been named the Official Richmond County Female Student-Athlete of the Week presented by Rockingham NC Self Storage.

Extending its winning streak to four consecutive matches, the Lady Raider bowling team used a season-best performance from Thompson in a pair of victories over Union Pines.

The Lady Raiders’ only returner this season, and the team’s anchor, Thompson earned her third career recognition.

CLASSROOM CREDITS WITH AVA THOMPSON

The spring semester started the same day as the Lady Raiders took down the Lady Vikings. Thompson is a dual-enrollment student at Richmond and Richmond Community College.

Currently with a 4.59 weighted grade point average, Thompson made all As during the first semester. 

Over the next two nine-week periods, Thompson will take two classes and Richmond —AP Biology and Chemistry Honors. At RichmondCC, she’ll earn credits in Spanish 112, Math 172 and Economics 252.

When she’s not bowling or playing for Richmond’s soccer team, Thompson is involved with the school’s chapter of the National Beta Club.

“KNOCKING DOWN PINS” WITH AVA THOMPSON

Richmond picked up nine points in the Sandhills Athletic Conference standings with victories of 4-1 and 5-0 over Union Pines last Thursday.

The team rolled several season-high numbers in the second match, including spares (14), closing percentage (53.3%), single-game score (163, tie), pin total (553) and game average (138.3).

Thompson was key in the anchor position, combining to close out a season-best 14-of-22 frames in the two wins (63.6%). She bowled a total of seven strikes and seven spares in the victories.

In the first game of the second match, Thompson closed out a 163-90 win by rolling a trio of strikes in the 10th frame. She finished with five total strikes in the 5-0 win.

Through 14 matches this season, Thompson has bowled 34 strikes and 43 spares (76-of-144) with a .528 closing percentage. 

The Lady Raiders (8-6) will close their regular season Thursday against Scotland. The match will be in Laurinburg and start at 4 p.m.
