Busy first week of spring sports begins Monday

The high school spring sports season kicks off Monday.

ROCKINGHAM — The high school winter sports season officially wrapped up last week, and now several Richmond Senior High School spring sports programs will get their feet wet in a busy first week of the 2020 season.

Opening their respective seasons this week will be the varsity baseball, softball, girls’ soccer, boys’ tennis and girls’ track and field teams. The junior varsity baseball, softball and girls’ soccer teams will also get underway.

Larsen, Lady Raiders open with three games

Monday will see the girls’ junior varsity and varsity soccer teams kick off the official start of the spring season, heading to non-conference Southern Lee High School. The games are slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Raiders and head coach Chris Larsen will have off until Friday, when they’ll open Sandhills Athletic Conference play at home against Purnell Swett at 5:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. On Saturday, Richmond will face Gray’s Creek High School in the Kickin’ It with the Crew tournament (3 p.m.).

Ransom, Raider baseball begin new season with four games

Also having a busy start to the new season is first-year head coach Rob Ransom and the Raider baseball team. Also in action will be the JV team and head coach Corey Wallace. Both teams open at home on Monday against non-conference Anson High School, starting at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The two teams will split up Tuesday, with the varsity team traveling to non-conference Cape Fear High School (5 p.m.) and JV hosting the Colts at home (5 p.m.). Closing the week at home on Saturday, Richmond will welcome in two more non-conference opponents in Ashley and E.A. Laney high schools at noon and 4 p.m.

Hope, Raider tennis ready for SAC slate to begin

In tennis action, the Raiders and third-year head coach Patrick Hope will start their new season with two matches this week. 

They will travel to SAC opponent Seventy-First High School on Tuesday, and host rival Scotland High School in their home opener on Thursday. Both matches are set for 4 p.m.

Way, Lady Raider softball welcome new season with three games

Head softball coach Mike Way and the varsity Lady Raiders will begin their quest to win an eighth straight SAC title on Tuesday at Southwestern Randolph High School (7 p.m.). The JV Lady Raiders and head coach Jordan Fortune will also play the Lady Cougars at 5 p.m.

A night later, Richmond will host its home opener against another non-conference opponent, welcoming in Uwharrie Charter Academy at 6 p.m. Both teams will round out the week on Thursday at Anson, seeing the JV team start at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity team at 7 p.m.

Miller, Lady Raider track and field to open at Reid Ross

The final team to open this week will be the Richmond girls’ track and field team, competing at the Reid Ross Invitational. Head coach Reggie Miller and the Lady Raiders are slated to begin competition at 9 a.m.
