SANFORD — The Richmond Senior High School boys’ soccer team began Sandhills Athletic Conference play Monday with a loss.
On the road at Southern Lee High School, the Raiders surrendered a 5-1 defeat, their seventh straight loss since winning their season opener.
An early 1-1 draw through the game’s first five minutes was taken over by four answered goals by the Cavaliers (8-1, 1-0 SAC).
After a goal in the fourth minute gave Southern Lee an early advantage, junior forward Memphis Jacobs was able to make it a new game less than a minute later.
Scoring his second goal of the season, Jacobs used his head to redirect the ball into the net on an assist from senior midfielder Gonzalo Gonzalez.
Southern Lee took a 2-1 lead in the 10th minute, which would remain the score until halftime.
Following the second goal, senior starting goalkeeper Adrian Padron (injury) was replaced by junior keeper Camden Williams, who would play the remainder of the match.
The Cavaliers tacked on insurance goals in the 55th, 63rd and 77th minutes.
The Raiders (1-7, 0-1 SAC) have another road conference match Wednesday at Pinecrest High School (4-2, 0-0 SAC). They will try to end their losing streak starting at 7 p.m.
