Ellerbe volleyball to host Lady Rockets in season opener

ELLERBE — The wait for volleyball is finally over for Ellerbe and Rockingham middle schools.

On Tuesday, Dec. 1, the Lady Wildcats will open their season at home against the Lady Rockets. First serve is set for 4 p.m.

Due to the pandemic, all of Richmond County Schools’ four middle school teams will play a three-game, in-county regular season. The shortened campaign will conclude with a conference championship match on Dec. 16 between the top two programs.

Ellerbe athletic director Allen Adeimy noted that only a total of 25 spectators will be permitted in the gym during Tuesday’s match, per North Carolina High School Athletic Association guidelines.

Each Ellerbe and Rockingham player will be given one spectator pass for entrance into the game. Adeimy said the pass must be presented at the gate, along with the $3 admission fee.

Temperatures will be taken for all spectators, players and team personnel. In addition, all spectators must complete a series of COVID-related questions upon entrance. Adeimy will be outside of the gym screening spectators.

“Ellerbe, Rockingham and Richmond County Schools know that these are not ideal circumstances for athletic events,” Adeimy said.  “We at EMS want to make sure that each player, for both teams, has the chance to have a loved one here supporting them.

“We cannot accommodate more than the allotted passes, so please do not bring small children or additional spectators to the match.”

With questions or concerns, Adeimy can be reached at 910-582-7925. The Richmond Observer will report on the results of Tuesday’s match.
